Paul Carter

Paul Carter is co-director of Material Thinking and Professor of Design (Urbanism), School of Architecture and Urban Design, RMIT University, Melbourne. Educated at Oxford and resident in Australia since the early 1980s, Paul has made a distinguished contribution to postcolonial studies and creative research theory and practice. As artist, poet and dramaturg, he has explored new practices of public space design. His current title, Translations, an Autoethnography: Migration, Colonial Australia and the Creative Encounter brings together these interests – in the figure of ‘drawing out’, the inner line of the artist and the outer line of public space dramaturgy find a new ‘meeting place.’ Publications include The Road to Botany Bay (1987, 2010), The Lie of the Land (1996) and Material Thinking, (2004). Paul’s sound art practice is documented in Amplifications: Poetic Migration, Auditory Memory (2019), and Absolute Rhythm: Works for Minor Radio (2020).
