The deadline for tutor applications has now passed.

We are now accepting tutor applications for our annual Architecture Summer School. The school, which was set up by the Drawing Matter Trust in 2017, offers free places for students from all backgrounds to get a taste of architecture, both as an academic subject and as a future career.

Applications are invited from professionals with architectural training or a background in an adjacent field who have not yet had the opportunity to teach in a formal context.

Tutoring on the Summer School is a unique opportunity to develop your views on teaching in conversation with others, while engaging with curious students and sharing your lived experience and expertise to inspire them.

During the five-day course, you will guide students in undertaking many activities, including individual and collective drawing exercises, group discussions, practical experimentation, and other forms of collaborative learning. The Summer School also includes a workshop exploring Drawing Matter’s collection of many-thousand architectural drawings; and a visit to the archive of the Zaha Hadid Foundation.

This year the school has a new venue and format, taking place across five days at Drawing Room in Bermondsey, SE1. The location is situated in a complex urban context, which we hope will spark questions about the role of the architect in society today.

The Summer School tuition is led by Andrew Clancy, Professor of Architecture at Kingston University.

  • The Summer School runs daily from 10am to 6pm at Drawing Room, Bermondsey, from Monday 19 to Friday 23 August 2024. Tutors will need to be present for the full five days.
  • In preparation from the Summer School, successful applicants will be required to attend a half-day in-person/online workshop on Friday 9 August 2024 (full details TBC) to develop the brief and programming with Professor Andrew Clancy, and Sakiko Kohashi from Kingston University.
  • Tutors will receive a stipend of £650. Tutors based outside London will receive an additional £175 contribution towards their transport/accommodation costs.
  • Tutors will need to arrange their own transportation, food, and accommodation.

Applications should be submitted to with the subject: ‘ASS2024 TUTOR APPLICATION – [YOUR NAME]’ (emails without this exact subject will be missed).

The deadline for applications is Midday (BST) on 7 July 2024. Successful applicants will be informed by 14 July 2024.

Please include the following in your application:

  • A single PDF attachment with one-page short CV, and four images of your work, each on their own page.
  • An .mp4 file of a two-minute video that introduces yourself and your interest in the built environment.

The Drawing Matter Trust supports architectural education through workshops, seminars, publications, and short courses.

The Architecture Summer School would not be possible without the support of our partners, the Zaha Hadid Foundation, Hauser & Wirth, Kingston University and of many architecture practices in the UK and abroad.
