At Shatwell – The Silo at 40hz

DISINFORMATION, CLOSED CIRCUIT, 2021

In the summer of 2021 an immersive sound installation by Disinformation was installed in one of the disused grain silos at Shatwell Farm. The work, titled Closed Circuit (2021), transformed the silo from a relic of Shatwell Farm’s productive past – it was built when the site was an operating dairy farm – into a ‘strange laboratory’ within which visitors experienced sound as it resonated the space and through the sensations of touching the vibrating walls.

Video documentation recorded on August 1, 2021 – the last day of the installation. Headphones recommended.

‘Architecture is the simplest means of articulating time and space, of modulating reality and [of] engendering dreams’, and, perhaps paradoxically, in the silo at Shatwell, a familiar architectural form is re-purposed to create a kind of strange laboratory, within which, through the manipulation of architectural acoustics, of auditory and haptic sensations, the formal aesthetics and symbolism of pure geometry interact with (equally primal) tactile resonances and symbolism, to evoke long-forgotten reflexes, sense memories, and (arguably, to some extent) even dreams.
