Both to mark and celebrate Craig Hamilton’s generous gift of forty fascinating drawings to the Drawing Matter Trust, we are holding an exhibition and talks over two days in the archive. The informal display will include Craig’s own work and the drawings from the 17th-20th centuries which form his donation alongside complementary material from the Drawing Matter Collection.

On Friday 13 November, Craig will be in conversation with Ellis Woodman (Director, Architecture Foundation) to speak of the importance of drawing and the role of the drawings of earlier practitioners in the development of his own unique design practice (a recording will be available online following the event). On Saturday 14 November at 12.00, Craig will lead a tour of the exhibition (free, no booking required).
Wonderful drawings, collected by Craig over a lifetime, to display in his office in Wales and directly inform the work of the Practice. Their addition to the collection at Drawing Matter transforms our ability to fully represent some key figures—among them, Cockerell, Farey, Richardson, Lethaby, Smirke—and contributes powerfully to our ambitions to offer a complete history of drawing in the production of architecture.
Niall Hobhouse, Chair, Drawing Matter Trust

Craig Hamilton trained under Professor Barrie Biermann at the School of Architecture, University of Natal before re-locating to the UK in 1986. He set up his own practice in 1991 after a brief apprenticeship with Michael Reardon in Warwickshire. In 1995 the practice relocated to Radnorshire. He received the ICAA Arthur Ross Award for excellence in Architecture in 2018 and a TAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. His work has been published in two books; Temples and Tombs by Ellis Woodman in 2019 and The Architecture of Craig Hamilton at Old Parkland published by Triglyph in 2026.
Drawing Matter’s public programme offers the public opportunities to experience our drawings collection, which is usually only open to researchers by appointment and for student/practice workshops. Events take the form of talks at the archive, workshops by practitioners and open weekends.
