On Travel (Videos)

– Matthew Wells

Exploring the idea of conveyance through drawings and models from the Drawing Matter collection, asking how architects depict the movement of people, materials, and goods. Moving from roads and railways to airports and ferry terminals, Matthew Wells considers how different forms of architectural representation make travel visible.

Looking at places of arrival through drawings from the Drawing Matter collection, ranging from Disneyland and Jerusalem to a holiday house, an imagined metropolis, and an English coaching inn. Matthew Wells considers how architectural drawings have imagined the places to which we travel.

Examining how architects and artists use drawing to make sense of the places we encounter through travel. Moving from ancient ruins and archaeological sites to sketchbooks and guidebooks from the Drawing Matter collection, Matthew Wells asks how drawings preserve our experiences and enable us to share them with others.

These videos, filmed in the space of the archive, are part of an ongoing series at Drawing Matter, where we ask scholars and practitioners to look closely at and comment on particular drawings, sketchbooks, and artefacts in the collection. Find more from the series here.
